Professional Development.
Our local chapter offers monthly luncheons with informative presentations by guest speakers. We also host or co-host conferences and symposia periodically to provided more extensive focus on a logistics topic. Find out more at our 'News & Events' page.

We publish a monthly newsletter, The Challenger. Try a sample copy at our 'Newsletter' page.
We host plant and government agency tours periodically, with emphasis on the logistics considerations. Past tours included the Saturn automotive plant and Marshall Space Flight Center.
Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) Local Training and Exam Administration
The chapter normally administers a CPL exam twice each year, in May and November, in concert with the international test schedule. The exam cost, payable to SOLE Headquarters, is $225 for members and $375 for non-members. (SOLE Membership Fee is $140.00; you do the math. :-) The CPL exam is a proctored, closed book exam in four parts, each part two hours long. A full discussion of the CPL program can be found on the SOLE International website at http://www.sole.org/cpl.asp .
The chapter conducts two “Logistics Body of Knowledge” courses each year to help prepare prospective examinees. The course meets one evening each week for approximately 14 weeks. It is a comprehensive review of the Logistics disciplines ranging from program concept, design, fabrication, production, distribution and sustainment, through product retirement. The course fee is $100, payable on the first class night, which includes a CD with course materials. There are also 5 required texts to be procured.
The Tennessee Valley Chapter has achieved a high rate of success with this course. The course will also welcome logisticians/engineers who do not wish to sit for the CPL exam, but simply wish to broaden their logistics knowledge. Government employees may use an approved Form 1556 to pay for the course. The VA will also reimburse the exam fee to those that are eligible. Our “Logistics Body of Knowledge” courses normally start in January and July. If you are interested in CPL certification, or know someone who is interested, please contact Timothy Dix, CPL, at (256) 461-5428 (W) or (256) 885-1685 (H), or email timothy.o.dix@boeing.com.
The Demonstrated Logistician Program
Recognizing the continuing nature of education and development of the professional logistician, in 2005 the Society implemented the Demonstrated Logistician Program. This program provides intermediate recognition of professional performance and continuing education in the individual fields of practice within the profession.
There are three levels of Designation in the Demonstrated Logistician Program. The first is the Demonstrated Logistician (DL), next is the Demonstrated Senior Logistician (DSL) and the highest level is the Demonstrated Master Logistician (DML). All levels require that the individual continue his/her professional education through college credit or CEU equivalent credit courses, coupled with technical training in his/her field and enabler training in areas associated with the integrated functions of business or government. In addition there are requirements for continued demonstrated professional performance in the practice of logistics.
The candidate can be awarded the highest level of recognition they qualify for at any time in his/her career. There is no requirement to start at the DL and work up to the DML. No formal examination is required for any level of recognition under this program.
The program is administered through SOLE HQ, where applications are processed, evaluated and recognitions issued based on the accomplishments. Additional information and application forms are here: http://www.sole.org/downloaddlp.asp
Demonstrated Logistician Certificate and Recognition Pins. Candidates who complete the necessary education and performance requirements are awarded a specially designed certificate attesting to the awarding of the appropriate level of recognition. In addition they are provided a lapel pin with the appropriate designation on it. A key feature of the program is that corporations and government agencies that chose to use the recognition as a part of their professional development activities can have a pin issued by SOLE where their name is displayed in the top field.
Having been granted the designation of DL, DSL or DML the individual may use the designation in a dignified manner similar to the recognition accorded the CML or CPL certifications of the Society. Either the full expression or the initials may be used after the individual's name on business cards and stationery but always in a manner consistent with the dignity of the Society.
